Local Builder Recognized in National Deck Competition
Justus Lambros, owner of Signature Decks, recently received an award
recognizing his achievements in deck design and construction. The awards were
presented September 15, 2010, by the North American Deck and Railing
Association (NADRA), at a ceremony in Baltimore, MD.
Justus took home the award for best alternative deck over 500 sq. ft. Mr.

“This is a real honor,” Mr. Lambros said of the awards, “To be recognized among
the best in the industry.”
“It is not everyday that we get an opportunity to design and build a project that
has the potential to win a national award. This project actually started out as a
conversation during the HBA’s annual house and home show. Our clients were
having trouble utilizing the steep slope overlooking a native flood plain that
offered no usable space. They already had a nice paver patio but, they were
looking for something with more style and function. After reviewing the site it
became apparent that the best solution was to extend their living space down the
hill and create a mulit-level deck that blends in with it’s surroundings. We also
designed and installed a gas fire pit and a pondless stream with four water falls.
The gentle curves and cable railing help to blend the deck into it’s surroundings
and give a more modern flair. Material choices were made on what best blended
with their existing patio and house color. Our biggest challenge was
incorporating the water feature under and around the deck. Although
challenging, the end result was amazing! The space is truly transformed with the
sounds of moving water, a dancing fire, and a perfect spot to relax.”
The contest was open to all NADRA builders, and was judged by a five member
panel that included: Derick Belden, Executive Editor, Home & Garden, Southern
Living Magazine Eric Liskey, Deputy Editor, Gardens & Outdoor Living, Better Homes
& Gardens Magazine “While judging, I was amazed at the creativity and skill evident in
the decks. It’s great to see an awards program that recognizes and celebrates the
craftsmanship that goes into these projects”. Glenn Mathewson, Project Manager,

To be eligible for consideration, each deck project was submitted with four digital
images, an explanation of all materials used; and a short essay.
The entries were judged on four criteria: Use of Space/ Functionality, Creativity,
Use of Materials and Overall Visual Appeal.
